Eating out in Wimbledon
When we headed to Wimbledon recently, I was amazed at how many new restaurants have opened. The village has changed so much, and with so much variety. Wimbledon, when I lived there, had one newsagent, a chemist, the pub – it was basic necessities. Now you have a variety of lovely independent shops. Including the indulgent and delicious deli Bayley & Sage, wine bars, cafe style eateries and yes, the horses are still there! I thought it would be helpful to give you a guide to ‘Eating out in Wimbledon’ and the recommendations from the local eyes I have nearby. Here are our tops tips for eating out from noon to midnight in Wimbledon;
Mornings in Wimbledon
Maison St Cassian : Does a good cooked breakfast & has an outside alley for beautiful balmy mornings. A firm favourite with locals and the tennis crowd.
Light Cafe : Grab a seat outside and watch the horses pass you by. Very good coffee & breakfast.
Pain Quotidien, Paul, Gails & Brew are all up on the High St, but you sit on the main road, so great for people watching, or grabbing a coffee to go.
Lunch in Wimbledon
San Lorenzo : Down the hill, is the Italian family run restaurant. Making pizza as delicious as every other dish that comes out of their kitchen. It has a wonderful outside terrace away from the street, to spend your entire afternoon. Very family friendly.
Light Cafe : This eatery features all day long. Independently run cafe style that serves up constantly good food. Known for delicious salads at lunchtime.
Sticks n Sushi : If you like sushi, this chain serves up super delicious sushi – one of my favourites.
Maison St Cassian : Mezze plates. So thinking small, this would fit your bill. Again reliably told it is fabulous food.
The Ivy : As with breakfast, this chain serves up its regular reliable menu, but the added bonus for me is the garden at the back.
Afternoon Tea in Wimbledon
Light Cafe – VERY good cakes, coffee and tea!
BREW on the High Street – Delicious cakes.
Dinner in Wimbledon
As above, with these added extras..
Patara : Thai chain of restaurants. It’s on the High Street, and the added bonus is the garden at the back. Delightful if you walked from the tennis to tuck into a plate of pad thai!
The Ivy : Usual menu, with an added advantage of an outside garden. This can make any evening feel good.
The Giggling Squid is another option for Thai – Patara being the better of the two.
Cannizaro House : A Hotel du Vin. A little soulless if totally honest, but lovely views over the lawn at the back. They often have summer music events, and again, reliably told these are good.
The Black Raddish. A new eatery along The Ridgeway, only open for supper with a small, but delicious menu. Has a private room for bigger groups.
Light House on the Ridgeway, run by the same people as the cafe. Good food.
Cocktails in Wimbledon
Hemingway’s in the village: Decorated with tennis faces, sit with a good cocktail and watch the horses pass you by.
Sundowners in Wimbledon
The two pubs that got the thumbs up for a stay-put were the Rose & Crown and the Dog & Fox pub. A firm favourite with the Wimbledon guys during the Championships. Food apparently good at both.
The Fox & Grapes on the Common is a great one stop wonder. Delicious food and family/dog friendly & The Crooked Billet, an old fashion pub overlooking Wimbledon Common opposite Kings College School. Grab a pint and wander to the Common the watch the sun go down. It’s picture perfect.
Special mention:
The Windmill in Wimbledon: Best flapjacks with a secret recipe! Apparently whoever has taken over the little cafe, has up their game on the food. So after a lovely long walk, it’s a perfect stop for a flapjack & a coffee! The cafe is attached to this working windmill – one of the last.. certainly the only one in London we know of.
